How the Luhn Algorithm Works

Checksum steps

Step 01

Reverse reading

Digits are read from right to left, starting with the check digit.

Step 02

Alternating doubling

Every second digit is multiplied by 2. If the result exceeds 9, subtract 9.

Step 03

Sum and modulo

All digits are summed. A valid number results in a sum divisible by 10.
