What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?

Por Quorify EditorialAtualizado em

Quorify's BMI Calculator helps you estimate your Body Mass Index from weight and height, classifying the result using official World Health Organization (WHO) ranges — also adopted by Brazil's Ministry of Health through SISVAN. The calculation runs in your browser and displays the classification (underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obesity classes) and the estimated healthy weight range for your height. BMI is a quick, useful population reference, but it's not a substitute for clinical evaluation: it doesn't distinguish lean mass from body fat and doesn't capture abdominal fat distribution. Athletes, pregnant women, elderly individuals, and children require specific assessments. Use the result as a starting point for a conversation with a dietitian or physician — not as a standalone diagnosis. Combine with Quorify's Macro Calculator for meal planning and Pace Calculator for running goals.

Casos

When to use

  1. Track weight evolution over months within a lifestyle-change plan, with an objective reference.

  2. Initial assessment during a dietitian consultation, providing a standardized number used in WHO and public health plans.

  3. Set a healthy weight goal from a height-based range instead of an arbitrary number.

  4. Assess preliminary metabolic risk (together with waist circumference and lab work) before a medical visit.

  5. Compare family progress when several members are changing habits — a simple, common reference.

Método

How the calculation works

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². The result is classified into ranges: below 18.5 (underweight), 18.5-24.9 (normal/healthy weight), 25-29.9 (overweight), 30-34.9 (class I obesity), 35-39.9 (class II obesity), ≥ 40 (class III/severe obesity). The calculator also shows the healthy weight range (the kg interval that keeps BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 for your height). The cutoffs are from the World Health Organization and adopted by SISVAN — Brazil's nutritional surveillance system. Known limitations: BMI doesn't differentiate muscle from fat (muscular athletes may have high BMI without excess fat), doesn't capture abdominal fat (important for cardiovascular risk), and needs adjustments for children, elderly, and pregnant individuals.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does a high BMI mean obesity?
Not necessarily. BMI is a quick population measure. Athletes with significant lean mass may have a BMI above 25 without excess body fat. That's why professionals use BMI alongside bioimpedance, waist circumference, and waist-to-hip ratio for a complete assessment. Use the result as a signal to investigate, not as a diagnosis.
Is ideal BMI the same for men and women?
WHO cutoffs are the same for adults of both sexes. However, healthy body composition differs — healthy women tend to have more essential fat than men. So two adults with the same BMI may have different metabolic profiles. Clinical assessment considers the whole picture.
Can I use BMI during pregnancy?
Not as the sole reference. Weight gain during pregnancy has specific ranges by trimester and pre-pregnancy BMI. The Ministry of Health has dedicated tables for prenatal monitoring. Use pre-pregnancy BMI as a starting point and follow your obstetrician/dietitian's guidance throughout.
Does BMI work for children and the elderly?
In children and adolescents (up to 19 years), BMI-for-age percentile by sex is used, not the same adult cutoffs. In the elderly (over 60), WHO suggests a healthy range of 22 to 27 — adjusting the interval to better reflect healthy nutritional status in that age group.
Why is my healthy weight range so broad?
Because the healthy BMI range (18.5-24.9) is wide. For someone 1.70m tall, the range spans 53.5 to 71.9 kg — an 18 kg healthy variation. Each person has an individual ideal weight within that range, depending on body composition, fitness, and history.
How do I measure my height correctly?
Standing, barefoot, back against a flat wall, looking straight ahead (Frankfurt plane). Use a rigid tape or stadiometer. Small errors (1-2 cm) noticeably alter BMI. For long-term tracking, always measure at the same time of day (morning, before putting on shoes).
